Annual Dinner 2007 | Centre de répit Philou | NOVA Montreal | PEPP Montreal | Financial update
Friends for Mental Health (West Island)Friends for Mental Health (West Island) is a bilingual, grassroots, community group that has been offering direct help to families of people with a mental illness for over 25 years. The range of services Friends provides includes practical information, supportive counselling, referrals, discussion groups, and respite care – all with the aim of helping families cope more effectively with the mental illness of a loved one. The Zhubin Foundation Grant will be used to help defray the costs of an additional full-time counsellor for the Family Support Program for which there is an extensive waiting list. The Family Support Program provides counselling to individual families over a period of about 10 sessions. With this additional funding approximately 80 families (240 participants) will be helped.
Following the presentation by Ms. Lucie Discepola, Executive Director of Friends for Mental Health (West Island), a member of their Board of Directors, a parent of a child with a mental illness, talked so eloquently about her experiences and how important this community-based support group has been in her life.
